Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 400,000 people per year, or over 1,000 people per day (about one person every 2 minutes). Nearly 95 percent of people who experience SCA die before they ever reach the hospital, victims of an often-correctable problem. Victims of SCA can often be saved if a defibrillator is immediately available and if a shock is delivered within three minutes of a witnessed arrest.

Sometimes CPR alone is not enough. Early CPR combined with early defibrillation gives victims of SCA the greatest chance of survival. The American Heart Association estimates that widespread public access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) could save an additional 40,000 lives per year.
